Availability of spatial and engine data presented in real-time can assist any operator with more efficient and cost-effective vessel management. The cost reduction impact of planned maintenance, risk reduction, monitoring, reduced administrative time and fuel savings are considerable.
Seacat Services, a leading wind farm support vessel operator, based on the Isle Of Wight, recently installed the newly developed iRAMS system onto the ‘Seacat Courageous’, their first 24 seater vessel.
The system was installed to assist with the vessel sea trial and remote monitoring was undertaken from onshore, allowing staff real-time visibility of the vessels performance.
Once the vessel was in operation, further information received via iRAMS aided in the prompt diagnosis of a problem. A plastic bag which had been sucked-up by the vessel caused the engine temperature to rise rapidly.
As a direct result of iRAMS monitoring the engine temperature parameters, an automated e-mail was sent to Sam Deloud Clark at Seacat alerting him to the problem.
When the crew on-board the vessel contacted Sam to explain the situation they were surprised to hear he was already aware of the problem and, having analysed the data, was well placed to direct their efforts at resolving it more effectively.
Sam Deloud Clark commented, ‘Having actual data from the machinery on my screen certainly helps to give a clearer picture of events than the descriptions given over the phone by the crew alone. This improves my confidence in getting to the root cause problems more quickly’.
iRAMS also reduces fuel consumption by way of influencing Skipper driving behaviour. In this particular example on another operator's vessel, e-mail alerts were preconfigured and an alert sent directly to the shore side Operations Manager whenever 100% throttle was seen to be constantly engaged.
In this case, over the course of a week, a number of alerts were received by the Operations Manager showing the vessel was at 100% throttle consistently during normal transit operations.
The subsequent investigation within the iRAMS history data showed the vessel was consistently exceeding the recommended optimum speed and throttle position, consuming unnecessary fuel.
iRAMS provided the monitoring and alerting tools to enable the operator to introduce a fuel efficiency program within its fleet, ultimately resulting in fuel cost savings to its end client.
