AST is pleased to have been able to supply Alice Griffin, freelance writer and graphic designer with a BGAN EXPLORER 500 enabling her to take her work on the road with her family as they travel across Europe.
After some investigation, and discovering that Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman had used an EXPLORER 500 terminal (also supplied by AST) on “Long Way Down” and “Long Way Round”, Alice decided a BGAN would be a worthwhile investment in helping her keep in contact with regular customers and be able to conduct her business anywhere. “If you’re a freelancer, you’ll know that hanging on to your regular clients is imperative, because to have to start from scratch again takes a hell of a lot of work. Once you’ve bought the kit you choose a tariff: pay as you go, inclusive allowance, etc, if you simply use it to send/receive emails and text files via an email client, it’s relatively cheap because most emails are only a few KBs.”
Prior to receiving her EXPLORER satellite terminal, Alice had relied on trying to find internet cafes to be able to contact her customers and send them work. However, finding an internet café in many remote areas is not always possible.
Since leaving the UK, Alice and her family have driven all round France where they experienced muddy campsites, hillside breakdowns and time on a small horse farm before heading over the Pyrenees to Spain for fiestas, siestas and olive farms. They will be living in a small rural community in the Andalusian Mountains until February, when they hit the road again on their search for a new home. Alice blogs about her travels with her family using the EXPLORER 500, and continues her work as a freelance writer and graphic designer.
