Applied Satellite Technology Ltd is proud to have sponsored Team Latitude, a team of three who circumnavigated the world in a Land Rover Defender.

The team, Spike Reid, David Smith and Peter Lovell won a bursary from the Royal Geographical Society/IBG to study climate change.  They decided on a trip in excess of 16,000 miles along the latitude line, 50° North, which by the time they return will have taken them more than 5 months to complete.

Team Latitude departed Cornwall on the 1st May 2008; travelling thru Europe and Asia before reaching Sakhalin, and island lying in the North Pacific, off the coast of Russia.  From here they will travel to Japan to ship the Land Rover across to Vancouver where they restart their journey across Canada to Newfoundland where their journey ends.  During this time they will have observed and recorded how changes in climate have affected people's lives, in particular speaking to local farmers.

Throughout their journey Team Latitude updated their blog site ( using the satellite communications equipment provided by AST.  They also used the equipment to stay in touch with their friends and family during the time away from home.

Peter Lovell from Team Latitude commented, "as a mobile team travelling across vast open areas we regard good communications as our life line and a necessity.  AST has supplied us with an Iridium satellite phone and a BGAN terminal.

"The satellite phone has allowed us to stay in contact with friends and family (receiving messages of encouragement, birthday wishes and even cricket scores!) as well as being the primary piece of equipment - in fact we rate it as probably our single most important piece of equipment.

"The BGAN terminal has given us access to the internet anywhere along our route.  There are a lot of people at home who are interested in our progress and being able to upload our photos and stories whilst on the road have made a massive difference for both us and people at home."

The team are now on the final leg of their expedition, travelling across Canada, they will then return to the UK to report on their findings.
