Key facts

  • Offshore resilience requires secure connectivity
  • Remote connection in the Australian outback
  • Pole-to-pole communications

Remote working has never been in the spotlight as much as it is now, with over a quarter of the world’s population self-isolating and working from home due to the global pandemic.

Newsfeeds and inboxes are filled daily with stories about staying connected and best practice for communicating in this somewhat new way of working for many of us. A whole host of different industries are embracing digitalisation in their businesses to keep employees connected and their businesses operating efficiently and safely.

This reliance on technology is paramount to many business activities so this begs the question of what would we do if the terrestrial networks become too congested? At AST, we work closely with many companies that operate in remote locations and help to keep these workers that permanently operate independently, isolated from the population, connected. How do they stay connected?

Offshore resilience requires secure connectivity

In the Atlantic Ocean, leading oil and gas services company communicate remotely to their offshore platform via a satellite network. A bespoke satellite solution designed by AST provides a secure IP connection utilising the Iridium Certus® network allows engineers to retrieve data and control the subsea equipment. It is safety-critical that engineers can connect and manage the control station on the platform in a seamless and reliable way, giving them the ability to remotely execute valve commands or other safety and operational tasks.

Remote connection in the Australian outback

Ergon Energy maintains and manages the regional electric distribution network across Queensland, Australia. They needed remote connectivity that would provide a single, ubiquitous, reliable network that was impervious to natural disasters and weather events while providing a high level of security – by implementing Inmarsat’s BGAN M2M service Ergon Energy can remotely monitor, control, and manage their recloser network in real-time.

Pole-to-pole communications

State-of-the-art vessels operated by Oceanwide Expeditions sail in extreme locations and demand the latest communication systems. In 2019 AST and Alphatron Marine provided Oceanwide with an Iridium Certus® system which will offer crew and passengers reliable high-quality voice and data connectivity, globally. Mr Mark van der Hulst, COO of Oceanwide Expeditions, expressed that Iridium Certus® was the obvious choice for Oceanwide Expeditions as it’s the only network to provide reliable coverage in remote polar regions, with the ability to deliver voice and data connectivity, whatever the conditions.

Secure connectivity is crucial for many businesses whether in a remote location in the middle of a busy city – having a dependable connection will enable a business to operate anywhere it needs to on the planet. At AST we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach and are dedicated to designing, implementing and supporting solutions tailormade to meet your unique needs and keep you connected anywhere in the world, 24/7.

Wherever you are, whatever your remote connectivity requirements, AST has a solution. To discuss how we can take you further with one of the friendly team call +44 (0)1493 440 011 or email
