AST Systems provided UKaid with satellite communication equipment to assist with the aid operation in Haiti following the earthquake on 12th January 2010.
The Department for International Development (DFID) manages Britain’s aid to poor countries and works to help eradicate extreme poverty providing aid and support for humanitarian emergencies. This work is now carried out under the UKaid banner to make it immediately apparent where public money from the UK is being used to fund relief efforts such as the Haiti earthquake response.
AST Systems has worked closely with UKaid for a number of years, providing a variety of satellite and radio communications equipment. Most recently this has included Inmarsat BGAN terminals and Iridium satellite handsets which are currently being used at UKaid’s base camp in Port au Prince, Haiti. The base camp is the hub of operations ensuring aid is being effectively distributed to where it is needed the most, therefore reliable remote communications are consequently of paramount importance.
Since the earthquake in Haiti, AST Systems has been working with UKaid to help re-commission various 4x4 vehicles fitted with VHF Mobiles, Codan HF transceivers and Thrane & Thrane TT3062D Inmarsat mini-M terminals which have all been flown to Haiti to assist in the aid operation.
Managing Director of AST Systems Ltd said “Working through the night to ensure all the vehicles communications were fully tested and operational before being transported to the airport was the least we could do to help in what must be a logistical nightmare”.
AST Systems also provided UKaid with additional Iridium 9555 satellite handsets and Cobham EXPLORER 500 and 700 BGAN terminals. A variety of peripheral equipment such as solar panels and spare batteries has also been supplied.
