AST is recruiting for a full-time Network Support Engineer. The role will be based in Great Yarmouth and Norwich offices (UK). Reporting to a Lead Network Engineer and Group Technology and Infrastructure Manager to ensure that AST’s IT Networks, located in Great Yarmouth, and Norwich, as well as the Integra Network (provides IP connectivity to AST customer devices), are kept secure, stable and provide a high level of service to its users

You must have proven ability of configuring Switches, Routers and Firewalls with the ability and willingness to improve their knowledge on a steep learning curve.

There will be a customer-facing element to the role therefore being comfortable with talking to customers at all levels this is a must.
The position is suited to someone who has a can-do attitude and is keen to work in a dynamic and vibrant business.

Working as part of a small team there will also be opportunities to gain knowledge of Enterprise & satellite technologies.

Principle responsibilities

  • Become the main point of contact for all internal networking infrastructure as well as the ‘AST Integra Network’, which comprises 3x Points of presence made up of routers, switches and security devices, a Global IP network, and authentication, DNS, (S)FTP, SMTP Services and other application services.
  • Responsible for all ‘Business as usual’ tasks, up-to-date documentation and taking ownership relating to internal networking services and the ‘AST Integra Network’. Ensuring the network stays secure and all changes/upgrades are aligned with security best practices.
  • Responsible for supporting customer solutions as part of the Group Technical Team.
  • To respond to and manage support tickets from Helpdesk and if required liaise with other AST teams and 3rd parties.

Skills & experience (required)

  • Good understanding of TCP/IP & OSI model
  • Network administration supporting core business environments
  • Knowledge of LAN switch configuration on Cisco Switches
  • Knowledge of configuration on Cisco Routers including routing protocols
  • Knowledge of Firewall & VPNs
  • Experience of Network Management systems/platforms
  • Design, testing & implementation of changes to networks, including software updates, hardware changes and configuration changes
  • Creation of accurate documentation including designs, implementations plans and standardisation templates
  • Good understanding of Network Security
  • Administration of VOIP Telephony systems
  • Strong written & verbal communication skills

Skills & experience (desirable) 

  • JNCP/CCNP or equivalent
  • Service provider networking knowledge
  • Understanding of network powered services from the customer perspective
  • Pre- and post-sales support
  • Technical project leadership
  • RF/satellite communications exposure
  • Understanding of the ITIL framework

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Excellent listening, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to effectively prioritise and execute tasks while under pressure
  • Taking responsibility for business-critical issues

Travel will be required to other AST offices, AST Data Centres and customer sites both in and outside the UK.
